ATHLETE OF THE MONTH – Marilyn
Occupation: I’m a receptionist at a few Weight Watchers meetings & do the ordering & stocking for 2 of its small locations
Which class do you usually attend? 5:30 pm or 6:30
How long have you been CrossFitting? It’s been 3 yrs this past June
What brought you to CFHB? When Bill & I were dining at Foley’s Backstreet Grille, he asked Karen what the kids were doing & she told us that Kevin had opened a Crossfit on 138. I had never heard of Crossfit & when I asked my kids, they said it was for hard-bodied twenty year olds. I checked it out online anyhow & realized it was for anyone so I paid Kevin a visit.
What keeps you coming back? I enjoy working in classes especially w/such pleasant individuals, I like having a class coach, & I never get bored because it’s a different workout every time – I have fun.
What is your athletic background? I’ve always liked to move; as a kid i did ice skating, swimming, biking, rope jumping, hula hooping, etc. In HS, I did basketball, softball, field hockey which may have been all there was for girls. In college I majored in Phys. Ed. & belonged to the modern dance troupe.
How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle and level of fitness? Crossfit has definitely improved my fitness level; I can now do things that I had never been able to do or had even heard of before. My posture is a lot better & I love feeling strong & being able to easily lift things at work that my co-workers can’t.
What is the One Thing you have done here that you never thought you could do? Climb a rope
What motivates/inspires you? I want to be as active as I can for as long as I can & not rely on others to do things I need. Mick Jagger is still going strong & me too. Also about 6 yrs ago I had symptoms checked out & was diagnosed w/osteoarthritis in both hips & in thoracic vertebrae & told I would eventually need hip replacements. I have been doing various resistance training ever since & no longer have symptoms, but Crossfit is the best.
What is your proudest CrossFit achievement? doing a box jump

What goals have you achieved in CrossFit?
I can now do a burpee, a du, box jump, rope climb, jog more than 100 yds, 20# WB, wall climb.
Hobbies/interests outside of CrossFit? I really enjoy some tv: HBO comedies – they’re very warped & I love Keith Morrison on Dateline NBC. I also like reading magazines & the daily Globe (the softer news can be so interesting).
Tell me about your diet: I’m a Weight Watchers person which means that no food is forbidden but that one should be eating a lot of lean protein along w/fruits & veggies, minimal processed sugar, plenty of fluids (not fruit juices), whole grains vs white carbs, healthy fats, but w/room for some treats so we don’t feel deprived which can lead to a binge. I do ff milk (Fairlife brand has 13 g protein), but make my protein shakes w/Silk sugar-free vanilla almond milk. I also like some natural nut butters & a little creamed honey & enjoy my coffee every morn w/some Irish butter & coconut oil.
Any advice for new members? Follow the coach in order to use correct form so u r targeting the intended muscles & don’t injure yourself. If u can’t do that, use the scaling options to gain strength. Don’t be overly concerned w/# of reps – those will increase. Form before Fast
